Sopris Capital buys AI imaging platform Blackford Analysis from Bayer
Blackford, whose platform hosts more than 130 AI applications from over 45 vendors, will be combined with Sopris portfolio company Azra AI.

Sopris Capital, a US multi-strategy investment firm, said on 9 October 2026 that it had completed the purchase of Blackford Analysis from Bayer 1. Blackford runs a platform that lets radiology departments deploy and manage AI imaging tools from many vendors through one system 1. The announcement gives no price 1.
The deal
Sopris plans to merge Blackford into Azra AI, one of its portfolio companies, and expects that step to finish within days or weeks 1. Azra AI sells software that identifies and tracks patients with cancer and other complex illnesses across their care 1. Blackford will stay a separate legal entity, with operations in Scotland and the United States, and Sopris says existing customers and partners will see no disruption to current deployments 1. A further announcement is promised once the combination is complete 1.
Blackford was founded in 2010 and launched what it calls the industry's first AI orchestration platform in 2016 1. The platform now carries more than 130 AI applications from over 45 partner vendors, and is used by equipment manufacturers and hospitals in several markets 1. Its pitch to health systems is a single, vendor-neutral route for bringing third-party imaging algorithms into the radiology workflow 1.
What it means for the market
The sale takes a piece of imaging AI infrastructure out of a large pharma and medical imaging group and puts it into a portfolio built by a financial investor. For Bayer, the release confirms the exit but gives no reason or value 1. For Sopris, the logic is vertical: Abinav Sankar, managing partner, said Blackford gives the firm a position at "the moment an image is captured and analyzed", so that its portfolio can follow patients "from first scan through survivorship" 1.
That matters to the vendors whose algorithms run on Blackford. An orchestration layer decides which tools a radiology department can switch on easily, and it now sits in the same group as a cancer care navigation business. Sopris says Blackford's capabilities let Azra AI work "with any AI imaging algorithm" further upstream with its customers 1. Whether the platform stays neutral in practice for competing algorithm vendors is not addressed beyond the commitment to keep serving current partners 1.
For hospital buyers, including NHS imaging networks that use orchestration platforms, the immediate message is continuity. James Holroyd, Blackford's managing director, said the company would keep working with customers, channel partners and AI vendors while broadening that work under Sopris 1.
Caveats
The only source is the buyer's own announcement, which gives no purchase price, revenue, customer numbers or headcount 1. The merger with Azra AI is not yet complete, and its terms and structure will be set out in the further announcement Sopris has promised once it closes 1.
